Job Title: Lab Tech
Location: State College, Pennsylvania
Schedule: 7:00AM – 3:00PM x 5
Term: 13-week assignment with the potential for extension
Pay Rate: $46 – $49/hr
Astrya Global, a San Diego based medical staffing agency, is hiring a Lab Tech for a temporary assignment in State College, Pennsylvania. These positions are 13-week contracts with the ability to extend.
Responsibilities for a Lab Tech:
• Perform analyses on blood and other body fluids for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease
• Maintain proficiency to work in all clinical departments of the laboratory
• Perform assigned duties accurately, efficiently, and according to established procedures
• Use proper techniques and/or equipment in the performance of duties
• Prepare specimens for processing by accurately identifying appropriate specimens, logging into the department, entering all patient information required, and assuring proper testing as ordered
• Promptly process and begin analysis of all specimens by manual or automated methods to determine qualitative or quantitative results for efficient reporting
• Ensure quality control criteria are met before releasing any reports and immediately repeat any procedures which appear to be out of control following established departmental protocol
• Keep work organized to avoid confusion and potential for error
• Consistently review results for accuracy and completeness before releasing; repeat results that are not consistent with previous results, diagnosis, or fail delta checks; request new specimen when appropriate
• Seek assistance from supervisor when difficulties in proper identification, interpretation, or processing are encountered or when very rare abnormal results are obtained
• Assist with training of technical personnel by demonstration of techniques and review of work performance as requested by supervisor
• Participate in all proficiency testing or quality assurance activities as instructed
• Maintain current knowledge of laboratory and hospital policies and procedures as well as performance standards for the laboratory
• Demonstrate continuous awareness and compliance with safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures; advise supervisor of potential hazards when noted
• Suggest ways of improving laboratory services when appropriate
• Comply with policies for release of patient information and appropriately document the time and other required information when reports are released
• Maintain all departmental equipment and supplies
• Check the performance of all instruments daily and maintain all equipment, including backup equipment, in working condition at all times; communicate problems to supervisor promptly
• Troubleshoot both instrumental and procedural problems when they arise
• Assist with maintaining sufficient inventory of departmental reagents and supplies at all times
• Maintain cost control in utilization of materials and suggest ways to improve conservation
• Rotate, date, and test reagents as they are received or prepared to ensure accuracy and avoid expiration
• Assist with the implementation of new procedures and/or evaluation of new products or equipment
• Evaluate new products, procedures, or techniques and provide written information when requested regarding findings to supervisor
• Suggest changes in methodologies, workflow, etc. which will increase accuracy and/or efficiency of service
• Verify patient identification prior to specimen collection at all times to assure accurate testing
• Promptly respond to any request for specimen collection and communicate effectively with patient care areas if any delay occurs
• Perform related and miscellaneous duties as assigned and accept additional assignments from lab supervisors
• Voluntarily assist co-workers when patient care priorities and workload fluctuate
